The Olympiad

A national selection, not a course

The International AI Olympiad is a competition between countries. Each participating nation runs its own selection process and sends a small team to compete in scientific and practical rounds against the rest of the world.

About the organising body
01

What AION runs

We publish the syllabus, prepare candidates, run the national selection exam under live proctoring, and take the resulting team to the world stage.

02

What it costs

Nothing. Participation is free, and no part of the cycle is behind a fee.

03

How the team is chosen

On merit alone. Every candidate is assessed against the same published criteria, and the criteria are published before registration opens.

Track record

Nepal at the World Olympiad

A delegation every year since 2023, each team chosen through the same published selection process.

What you are tested on

Five examinable domains

The syllabus is published in full before registration opens and does not change mid-cycle, and each domain’s share of the marks is fixed for the selection exam.

Domain A

Mathematical foundations

The mathematics the rest of the paper stands on — vectors and matrices, probability distributions, optimisation, and the information-theoretic measures used to compare models.

20% of the marks · What it covers

  • Linear algebra
  • Probability
  • Optimisation
  • Information theory

Every question on the paper maps to one of these five domains. Nothing outside them is examinable.

Selection process

Five stages, one cycle

From registration to the world stage. Each stage has published dates and criteria.
